Much has been made about the growing power of digital-only sites like BuzzFeed, Vox, Gawker and The Huffington Post. Critics say it’s only a matter of time before they overtake lumbering, old media behemoths like The New York Times. Unsurprisingly, Times executive editor Dean Baquet has called bullshit.
In an interview with The Guardian, Baquet said he would only worry about digital outlets when they can do the type of reporting that the Times can. Until then? No problem.
“I will worry when they can make the commitment to keep Afghanistan staffed, to throw every available journalist at the Volkswagen scandal and to go all out to cover the ebola crisis,” said Baquet. “And I’m not seeing anybody do that, other than traditional big players.”
