“Can you be an ambitious person who is, nonetheless, striving for enlightenment?” That’s the mission statement from ABC News reporter Dan Harris for his brand new podcast 10% Happier, an offshoot of an earlier book and App about the professional benefits of meditation.
If Harris drew up an ideal guest list for this new project, he could not have hoped for a better result than the one that has hit the airwaves this week. The video feed for Episode #1 begins with a shot of Harris intoning:
“OK, so my guest today is someone you may have heard of… His name is His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. Thank you for joining us today, we really appreciate it.”
The “right back at you” that Harris then immediately adds, in response to His Holiness greeting him with the traditional Namaste salutation of both hands clasped together, might seem a little flippant. But as anyone who reads about the Dalai Lama knows, His Holiness has a very well developed sense of humor and likely took no offense.
Joining the Dalai Lama on Episode 1 is neuroscientist Richard Davidson (also pictured), founder of the Center for Healthy Minds. The guest for Episode #2 of 10% Happier? Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo. Gotta love podcasts.
Harris, by the way, has been meditating for six years now and recently, as he tells the Dalai Lama, he has greatly increased the amount of time he devotes each day to these sessions.
