Crimes Against Urbanity (Hitting Close to Home)

2005_02_evpent.jpgYesterday, I sent Lockhart over at Curbed
some photos
of new new construction over on the Bowery. This project is not to be confused with the Crime Against Urbanity that I posted about here early on. Nope, it’s more big fun for the beleagured Cooper Square area.

I knew that once Lockhart had the pics in his hot little hands, he’d get the inside scoop on what’s going on there. I have a vested interest in knowing because it’s very close to home. Today he posts that the new building will have “grand penthouses with spacious setbacks and private roof terraces.” East 5th St has already become quite the tony block – between the ever expanding restaurant empire of Grace & Jack Lamb to the former sound stage that turned into an artspace that turned into very expensive apartments (just diagonally across from the new development), there are a lot more town cars idling on the block than there have been in years past.

Now every time I walk past the new construction site, there’s a clutch of hand-wringing neighbors wondering and worrying about just how ugly and intrusive this new building will be. My guess? Very.</P
