Just in case you needed another reason to worry if Donald Trump is elected president, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has issued an unprecedented warning about him.
“Donald Trump, through his words and actions as a candidate for president of the United States, has consistently betrayed First Amendment values,” read the statement from CPJ chairman Sandra Mims Rowe.
“A Trump presidency would represent a threat to press freedom in the United States, but the consequences for the rights of journalists around the world could be far more serious,” continued Sims Rowe. “Any failure of the United States to uphold its own standards emboldens dictators and despots to restrict the media in their own countries.”
Sims Rowe concluded her statement by pointing out that it was not an endorsement of any other candidate. “This is not about picking sides in an election,” explained Sims Rowe. “This is recognizing that a Trump presidency represents a threat to press freedom unknown in modern history.”
