ABC News won two USC Annenberg Walter Cronkite Awards for Excellence in Television Political Journalism, it was announced this morning from the USC Annenberg School for Communications. ABC News’ “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” won for its On the Trail series and ABC News’ Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross and the ABC News Investigative Team won Special Achievement, a special commendation for “enterprise journalism” for breaking the Mark Foley Congressional Page Scandal.
Mr. Ross and the ABC News Investigative Team first reported on the Investigative Unit’s web page, “The Blotter,” questionable emails sent by then-Congressman Mark Foley to a former congressional page. That online report and further reporting on ABC News’ broadcasts and platforms prompted other former pages to reveal more sexually explicit instant messages from Foley. After being confronted by ABC News, Foley resigned.
“This Week’s” On the Trail segments focused on several heated Senate races during the 2006 Midterm elections, taking anchor George Stephanopoulos out of the studio to join candidates on the campaign trail. These segments provided a behind-the-scenes look at the campaigns, and each candidate while illustrating the driving issues in each race. On the Trail continues as a segment on “This Week,” now spotlighting the 2008 presidential contenders.
