Columnist Liz Smith Out at New York Post

Manhattan gossip columnist Liz Smith, who knew her way around a blind item long before today’s celebrity bloggers were born, is no longer a New York Post columnist, due to financial considerations. Her last Post column will appear this Thursday.

Starting next week Smith will move her column to women-celebrating Web site wowwow.com — of which she is a founder — marking the first time in 33 years that Liz Smith’s column will not be in a New York newspaper, according to the site.

“Our fabulous and beloved Diva of Dish will be here on wowwow, posting exclusive-to-Liz breaking celebrity news as it happens,” reads a story at Smith’s new home.

Smith also has been named a contributing editor at Parade Magazine; her next story for Parade, a profile of Liza Minnelli, is set to run this Sunday. Her column will continue to appear in Variety, in syndicated newspapers and on the Web.

Smith’s column began February 16, 1976, at New York’s Daily News; in 1991 she moved to Newsday, where she remained for more than a dozen years, and also ran in the New York Post and the Staten Island Advance — making her the first columnist to ever appear in three metropolitan newspapers simultaneously. She moved to the Post in 1995.
