CNN makeup artist Skip Smith was fired and escorted out of the building on Thursday at 11 a.m., FishbowlDC sources have learned. Word has it that this is a bitter pill to swallow for many at the network who saw him as beloved.
Smith, approximately 61, is known as “an institution” at the network as he has worked there for some 20 years. Sources tell FBDC he was a year or two shy of retirement. He has made up and de-shined everyone over the years from all the talent such as Wolf Blitzer to presidents such as Ronald Reagan, Bush 41 and Bill Clinton.
“I love Skip, everybody loves Skip,” a source said. “They kept him 20 years. He couldn’t have been that bad.”
Stay tuned. The makeup network in Washington is small and tight. Sources say this isn’t the end of this.
Correction: At the time of the reporting of this story, FishbowlDC learned that the escorting out of the building occurred Friday. We’ve since learned that the incident happened on Thursday at 11 a.m. and have changed the copy above to reflect the updated information.
> Update: Saturday 10:15 a.m. A CNN colleague of Smith’s told FishbowlDC late Friday night: “Skip was so LOVED!! We are all devastated. He was my co-worker, he was so full of life, and so talented. He had such love for his craft. It’s a sad, sad day here at CNN.”
