Citing Health Concerns, Nick Cannon Walks Away from NOW FM Morning Show

Nick Cannon gave his NOW FM/WXRK listeners a surprise this morning. It was the versatile performer’s final day hosting his radio show.

Cannon,  suffering from various health concerns in recent months, plus a hospital stay necessitated by a mild kidney failure, told his audience that he needs time to get better. Reports say Cannon, who at night hosts America’s Got Talent on NBC, was rushed back to the hospital last week for blood clots on his lungs.

The 31-year old will spend more time with his nine-month old twins, and his wife, Mariah Carey.

Cannon said in a statement:

“Under doctor’s orders, I have been asked to make my health first and cut back on some of my professional commitments in order to allow my body to get the rest that it needs to keep up with the demands of my multi-tasking schedule. It has been an absolute pleasure working with CBS Radio and the 92.3 NOW morning show team and I would like to thank them for their unwavering support. I will continue to host my syndicated Cannon’s Countdown weekend show and look forward to contributing to 92.3 NOW whenever possible. Even Superman has to sleep.”

Cannon launched WXRK morning show on January 19, 2010. One of his sidekicks, Sarah Lee was emotional in saying her on-air goodbye to Cannon, saying he became family and was never mean, a rarity, she added for radio.

Lee will remain on mornings, joined by afternoon drive personality Lil Cee on an interim basis.

“We have nothing but respect and understanding for Nick’s decision to step down from his day to day position as host of morning drive at 92.3 NOW, and fully support him as he takes on a less demanding role with the station in order to address his health,” Don Bouloukos, CBS Radio New York SVP/Market Manager, said in a statement. “Everyone at the station, all of the CBS Radio family wish him well, and look forward to his continuing contributions to 92.3 NOW.
