TLC’s “What Not to Wear” may be seeking frumpy female journos, but perhaps they’d make an exception for The Nation’s D.C. Editor Chris Hayes. He’s not frumpy at all, but let’s just say color coordination is not a hobby. Hayes’s truly garish ensemble, as seen in his appearance last night on MSNBC’s “Countdown” with Keith Olbermann, involved a bright red and black striped tie set against a grape purple button-down shirt. Ouch, Hayes, please warn us next time, so we can at least wear sunglasses. After offering sympathy to a Twitter follower who wrote, “That tie just hurts. Sorry,” he snapped at FishbowlDC about our “dogged” reporting. But soon, he admitted, “There’s no question it was a poor fashion choice.”
Earlier Wednesday, Hayes was spotted working on a laptop outside a Starbucks off Dupont Circle. He wore an earthy green polo-type shirt that far better suited his olive skin tone.
(Note to readers: The photograph above is what he wore, but the purple-y hue of the button-down is not quite as French blue as it appears – definitely more of a royal purple as pictured below.)
