A Utah man accused of eating a live baby rat and posting a video of it on Facebook was slapped with an animal cruelty charge — the state considers it a misdemeanor.
The video shows Andy Ray Harris, 31, put a hairless baby rat in his mouth, take a drink, chew and swallow. Then he high fives someone off camera.
The baby rat is seen squirming on a piece of paper before it’s eaten. People are heard cheering in the background after the deed is done.
You can watch the video that’s currently posted on what looks to be his friend’s page. We expect it will be taken down soon — if Harris heeds any legal advice, that is — but if you’re quick, you might be able to catch it.
The caption under the video reads [sic], “Seen jackass the movie we’ve got it at Spencers Arts.” Spencer Arts is a tattoos and piercing shop in Tooele Utah — perhaps the stunt was an attempt at advertising?
Harris claimed he ate the rat on a dare, and that it was going to be fed to a snake before he decided to eat it himself, according to the Deseret News.
The video was found by a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in March, and the link was forwarded to the local City Attorney’s Office.
Police allegedly recognized Harris from his previous interactions with law enforcement.
Harris made a brief court appearance Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. His attorney asked for more time to explore a couple of motions he was considering.
Given the damning evidence, it will be interesting to see what his defense can come up with. A pretrial conference was scheduled for July 19.
Do you think people should be allowed to post videos like this on Facebook?
