CNNMoney.com reports that Microsoft Corp. made an unsolicited $44.6 billion cash and stock bid for Yahoo on Friday, a deal that could shake up the competitive and lucrative market for Internet search.
Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, called the move the “next major milestone” for the software giant, the article said. “We are very, very confident this is the right path for Microsoft and for Yahoo,” he said.
It would certainly represent a sea change both on the desktop, where the two giants have the No. 2 and No. 3 positions in desktop search, and on mobile, where both have concentrated, multi-pronged efforts to be on as many handsets as possible.
