A White House Pool Report from the New York Times’ Steven Lee Myers:
The president continued his press conference, noting the apologies og other Iraqi journalists in the front row and answering two questions, one from each side.
For the record, the pool’ Baghdad bureau supllies a full quote from the shoe-thrower:
“This is a gift from the Iraqis, this is the farewell kiss, you dog.
Then he threw the second shoe and said “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.”
As the pool waited, the president had an interview with ABC News.
Shortly before 10 p.m. the president departed the Green Zone by helicopter to Camp Victory, where he greeted hundreds of troops inside the enormous rotunda of the Al Faw palace.. He was greeted by cheers and whoops. He recounted the progress of the war in Iraq and called the surge “one of the greatest successes in the history of the United States military.” “Thanks to you the Iraqi we’re standing in today is dramatically freer, dramatically safer and dramatically better than the Iraq we found eight years ago.”
He praised this generation of soldiers as part of the pantheon that came before and reflected on the sacrificew of those who had died. A full transcript is coming.
He spoke at a lectern in front of rows of soldiers, beneath an enormous American flag reaching nearly to the domed-ceiling.
The pool is now holding, and will depart shortly. Not clear if there will be time again to file another report.
