This morning Blackberry announced that they have developed a new version of their Facebook application which also includes support for Facebook Places.
While we recently wrote about the upgraded version of the Facebook application, version 1.9, being available in beta, it wasn’t clear at the time that the application would include support for Facebook Places. However according to a press release this morning, “Over the next 24 hours, users will receive notices to upgrade to Facebook for BlackBerry v1.9, and the new version is also available for download in BlackBerry App World.”
There are a number of new features with this version of the Facebook application including:
- The ability to check in, add a Place and tag friends
- View Places where friends have checked in
- GPS and BB Maps Integration
- Upgraded search functionality
- An update to friends lists, and
- Cleaner UI elements
Only a couple weeks ago we illustrated (via the picture below) that the new Blackberry application presents a major overhaul of the application’s interface. At the time however there were few details about Facebook Places, and many location users that had been using Foursquare, were complaining that there was still no support for Facebook Places. The application will be rolled out to users over the next 24 hours, which means we could see a massive increase in the volume of check-ins in the coming days.
We’ll be sure to post updates as we learn more about the new Blackberry application!
