Birnbaum Leaves WaPo for WaTimes

FishbowlDC has learned that the Washington Post’s Jeffrey Birnbaum is leaving the Washington Post for the Washington Times, where he will become its managing editor for digital operations. His last day at the Post is today.

>UPDATE: We have his full farewell memo, after the jump…

Please forgive this large mailing, but I wanted to deliver the good news to as many of the people I know and care about as soon as it was official.

I have a new day job–managing editor-digital of the Washington Times.

My former Washington Post colleague John Solomon took over as the Times’ executive editor this year and has been working hard to remake the place into a first rate journalistic enterprise. He has made amazing progress.

When he asked me to help him continue this rebuilding–and suggested that I keep a special eye on the growing part of the business, the digital side–I decided to take on the challenge.

My responsibilities will include the Times’ new and improved Web site, its growing television and radio operations and various new information businesses. I will also remain deeply involved in the news. I will have a strong hand in guiding news coverage, both suggesting and writing major stories.

I am also very glad to say that I will continue to appear on Fox News Channel, the Fox Business Network and Fox News Radio with the blessing of the Times.

I could not be happier and wanted to let you know right away. Please stay in touch and I will certainly be talking to you soon.

I’ve enjoyed my stay at the Post immensely–now nearly five years–and will miss the place and its wonderful people. But now it’s time for something new.
