About the organization:
The NASW exists to promote “the free flow of science news.” Its members are freelancers and staff writers at “most of the major newspapers, wire services, magazines, and broadcast outlets in the country. It also welcomes members who are the public information officers on science from government labs, universities, and other institutions.”

To join, you must:
For regular membership, submit five samples of work you produced for a lay audience in the past five years; you must include the publication or airing dates for each entry. Also, submit the names of two NASW members to sponsor you.

And for that, you’ll pay:
$75 for U.S. regular membership
$80 for Canadian regular membership
$90 for other foreign regular membership
$35 for U.S. student membership
$40 for foreign student membership
