Betsy Sharkey Becomes LAT Film Critic

Former entertainment editor Betsy Sharkey has a new post at the LA Times as film critic. *Spoiler Alert* Sharkey got into hot 'Sex and the City Fan' water in June when she mentioned some plot point about Mr. Good Bar or something. From LAT: To the idea of adding a few words of warning for those who might not want to read further because they haven't yet seen the movie, said Sharkey, "Two weeks into the run of a film, I'm just not sure it makes sense -- where do we draw the line -- three weeks out? When it goes into DVD release?" Spoiler alert: Don't read articles about movies you haven't seen and want to be surprised by. That's why you READ about films...to be informed. I wanted to give you a heads up that Betsy Sharkey, who has spent the last 10 years helping to guide the Los Angeles Times entertainment coverage, is now refocusing her skills on two of her great loves (writing & movies) in her new assignment as film critic, joining lead film critic Kenneth Turan to form a powerful team reviewing movies and commenting on the world of cinema. Betsy joined The Times as the television editor, drove the revamp and relaunch of Weekend Calendar, then became film editor and eventually entertainment editor, directing our movie, television and pop music coverage and helping to launch The Envelope's highly successful print edition. Most of her career, though, has been as a writer. Before joining The Times, Betsy wrote for the Adweek group of magazines, where she worked with legendary editor Clay Felker. She also has written extensively on film and television for a diverse range of national publications, among them the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Manhattan Inc., TV Guide, US Weekly and Esquire. She also has co-authored two memoirs by Oscar-winning actresses: "Looking for Gatsby" with Faye Dunaway, and the upcoming "I'll Scream Later," with Marlee Matlin, which will be published by Simon & Schuster in the spring.
