One public relations issued what they claim to be the “most amazing press release ever written” yesterday, in what we assume was an attempt to bait PRNewser and our counterparts in to a writing a blog post.
We didn’t have time but TechCrunch did, and Chicago-based boutique PitchPoint Public Relations is enjoying a bit of fanfare for it. They coughed up real money to put it on PRNewswire, knowing PR haters and followers would find it first thing in the morning on Google News.
It reads like the comparably obscure Tenacious D song–it’s not actually the best song ever, but it’s a tribute to that song, because they were too high to write it down in the first place.
It’s a piece of scriberly acrobatics, written by PitchPoint founder Mitch Delaplane, where he quotes himself: “I’ve been in the business for over ten years and have to say, I’m speechless,” claims Delaplane. “The title alone grabs you and demands that it be read. Then there’s this quote that completely takes things to an entirely new level. I’m proud of this press release. In fact, I think it is [really] amazing.”
Anyway, seeing an opportunity for a quick post worthy of fiery comments, TechCrunch’s Alexia Tsotsis pasted it in its entirety, thanking PR “god” Delaplane.
Equally interesting are the 178 comments (and counting) about the merits of covering such a press release, and the merits of TechCrunch in general in the wake of AOL’s acquisition. TC’s community manager Elin Blesener is weighing in periodically and politely to see what the blog can do better, and how it can continue to cover what’s important.
