Atlantic Media Re-launches, Emphasis on Mobile, Expanded Editorial

citylab feat picThe Atlantic recently announced the re-launch and expansion of its’ former site as, a re-envisioned destination with an eye toward mobile users first, as well as a responsive design and expanded editorial intended to widen the audience for the site’s coverage of issues facing global cities.

Some of the site’s new features include Navigator, a guide to urban life, and CityFixer, which organizes solutions-based stories around varied topics from streets and climate change to aging and mass transit.

Press materials call the Navigator tool “the modern urbanist’s guide to life,” that offers up tips and strategies for city-living in three sections: Etiquette, How To, and Stuff.

CityFixer collects some of the best ideas and stories for several key city issues including schools, civic life, policing, and energy use.

First launched in fall 2011 as The Atlantic Cities, has been praised for strong reporting and deep coverage of urban issues. The site has been credited as a leading information source for urban planners and developers.

Sommer Mathis, editor of, called urbanization the “story of the century,”:

Moreover, Atlantic Media says that the redesign will allow to be responsive across all digital platforms, optimizing for every screen size.

The company also says that the number of mobile unique visitors to the site has grown by almost 50 percent in the past year with an enhanced story page that presents maps, graphs, videos, and photos in a larger and more robust display.
