Armory Show to Expand, Renovate Venue

armory show.jpgIt’s awfully cold outside, and so our thoughts turn to spring and more specifically, to the Armory Show, which makes Manhattan an art bonanza in early March. A while back, we told you that the commissioned artist for the 2009 show is Ewan Gibbs, and now comes news of the fair’s ambitious expansion plans. First up is the planned $100 million renovation of the venue: The New York City Economic Development Corporation has designated the Armory Show’s parent company, Merchandise Mart Properties, to redevelop and expand the exhibition space on Piers 92 and 94. Why Pier 92, too? Because in addition to the usual global group of top contemporary galleries (154 galleries representing 22 countries) exhibiting on Pier 94, an additional 70 dealers will show on Pier 92 in The Armory Show – Modern, a new section of the fair dedicated to historically significant Modern and contemporary art. Other things to look forward to come March include new public programming that will work with local organizations to highlight neighborhood art scenes. But frankly, they had us at “historically significant.”
