Apple sold 20.34 million iPhones and 9.25 million iPads in the third quarter of this year, helping contribute to an all-time record in net profit for the company.
Taking iPods into account, that means the company has sold 222 million iOS devices cumulatively, up from 189 million at the end of last quarter. Android has had 135 million device activations to date, according to Google’s most recent quarterly earnings call.
“I think the Android activation number is a difficult one to get our heads around,” said chief operating officer Tim Cook, who went on to describe year-over-year growth rates in terms of quarterly iPad and iPhone sales. “Our numbers are very transparent and straightforward.”
Apple’s net income more than doubled, climbing to $7.31 billion, up from $3.25 billion in the same quarter a year earlier while net sales also nearly doubled, reaching $28.6 billion, up from $15.7 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.
Interestingly enough, the revenue category that includes sales of apps actually declined from the previous quarter. “Other music-related products and services,” which includes Apple’s revenue from the iTunes store, the app store, the iBookstore and sales of iPod services and Apple-branded and third-party iPod accessories slipped 4 percent from the previous quarter.
On the earnings call, Apple reiterated old numbers about the iOS app store including 425,000 applications available, $2.5 billion paid to developers and 15 billion downloads. Cook said there are more than 100,000 apps for iPads and he said “you would be hard pressed to find more than a few hundred” such apps for competing tablet devices.
The company also said it’s apportioning $16 for every iPad or iPhone sold and $11 for every iPod Touch sold to fund iCloud services.
Globally, Asia excluding Japan again led growth, growing 247% year-over-year. Amid reports from The Wall Street Journal that Apple is close to sealing a distribution deal for the iPhone through China Mobile, the company said that in the previous quarter it added 42 near carriers in 15 countries for iOS devices.
