Apple said iOS app store downloads crossed the 10 billion mark today. However, the most interesting numbers the company revealed suggest the rate at which consumers are downloading apps has at least tripled in the last year.
In the first year and a half, Apple saw about 3 billion downloads. In the last year alone, the company saw 7 billion downloads, said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. Without factoring in acceleration, that’s about 580 million apps downloaded per month.
Apple also added that it has 160 million iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users. It’s not clear if the company is double-counting people who carry multiple products though, since in the earnings call this week, Apple said it had cumulatively sold 160 million iOS devices. In any case, it suggests consumers have downloaded 62.5 apps per device on average.
The company also said it has 350,000 total iOS apps and 60,000 of them are designed specifically for the iPad.
