AP After Cash from Artful Obama Image

By now everyone has seen the Obama "HOPE" image designed by Shepard Fairey, an LA street artist. But did you know that his art was inspired by an AP photo? The AP does and now they want paid.

By now everyone has seen the Obama “HOPE” image designed by Shepard Fairey, an LA street artist. But did you know that his art was inspired by an AP photo? The AP does and now they want paid.

Fairey admits he based the piece on a picture taken by Manny Garcia; who briefly worked for the Associated Press in 2006 but denies being compensated for its use. Now, after distribution by countless organizations (including Obama supporters at campaign events), the AP says it owns the copyright and wants compensation.

This month, the image will appear at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Another version of the image has already been added to the National Portrait Gallery.
