Rovio, developer of the smash hit Angry Birds, will soon unveil the popular title in a new Christmas version. Angry Birds, which has been downloaded 36 million times across iOS and Android enabled devices, will also be available for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii in due time.
Rovio’s decision to port Angry Birds to consoles is not surprising. ALthough smartphone games are the most played, the strategy is to make the game available on as many devices as feasible, leaving no stone unturned. Angry Birds was originally developed for the iPhone and was downloaded over a million times within 24 hours when it launched in October of last year on Android.
“The smartphone gaming platform is actually turning out to be the biggest and most played out there. So it’s starting to beat the traditional games on consoles and PCs,” stated Peter Vesterbacka, Chief Executive of Rovio.
Angry Birds won’t be the first franchise to be ported to other consoles, but it will be the biggest yet. Rovio hasn’t yet announced when these versions will be available but it has started dropping hints of the upcoming Christmas expansion. The first piece of evidence comes directly from Rovio Mobile’s twitter feed addressing the new version as ‘Angry Birds Christmas’. A screen shot was also subsequently revealed via a tweet featuring a link to a screenshot of the holiday edition of the game.
Rovio has not officially yet confirmed nor denied the release of the holiday app although its twitter feed is filled with discussions about console versions of the game in work. Rovio most likely pursued the holiday edition after seeing substantial success with the Halloween edition. Angry Birds has done now 36 million downloads across iOS, ANdroid and Ovi, of which 10 million were paid via Apple’s App Store.
Plans for Angry Birds 2 have also been announced and expect that game to be different with a ‘lot more pigs’, according to Peter Vesterbacka.
