AMI Cuts Staff at Us Weekly

Around 40 staffers lose their jobs

Less than 10 days after announcing it had purchased Us Weekly from Wenner Media in a deal reported to be around $100 million, American Media has begun cutting staff from the publication, reports WWD’s Kara Bloomgarden-Smoke and the New York Post‘s Keith J. Kelly.

In a particularly bleak spin, Bloomgarden-Smoke reports that editor in chief Michael Steele and editorial director Jaimee Zanzinger held meetings around the cuts, even as they were among those let go, although that appeared to be an intentional move by Steele, as Kelly describes:

Steele — aware of the anger directed at Wenner and his son, Gus Wenner, for never addressing the full staff after the sale was announced — made sure he called each staffer individually into his office Thursday to deliver the news on whether he or she was being let go or offered a job.
