Amazon has announced an expansion to its Prime Now one and two-hour delivery service, introducing food delivery from local restaurants to its options. For now, restaurant delivery is only available for residents in select Seattle zip codes, but will expand going forward.
With Prime Now’s restaurant delivery option, users can browse the menus for local participating restaurants, place orders and track the status of their delivery in real time. The app allows users to browse by food type (Mexican, Thai, Italian, and so on), or by specific restaurant.
Amazon assures users there are no price markups or hidden fees associated with using the service. Customers can pay for their orders using the payment information already stored on their Amazon account, with each transaction supported by Amazon’s customer service, in case an issue arises.
Once an order is placed, an Amazon delivery driver will pick up the order and deliver it within an hour or less. For a limited time, delivery on all orders is free.
In a statement, Gus Lopez, general manager of Amazon Restaurants, commented:
Prime members can now enjoy food from the Seattle restaurants they love without having to drive all over the city. For many of these restaurants, this is the first time they are offering delivery, and we are delighted they have chosen to work with us.
Users can access Amazon’s restaurant delivery service via the Prime Now app, which is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. The service will compete with other mobile food delivery options, including GrubHub and Eat24, among others.
