Please forgive the hackneyed headline-paraphrase of the chorus from Billy Idol’s “White Wedding.” However, since privileged access to an outdoor performance by Idol in the heart of Hollywood was one of several experiences served up Tuesday by Tennessee whisky brand George Dickel to a lucky group of food and spirits journalists, FishbowlNY couldn’t resist.
The sweet October 21 mash-up began in the Jimmy Kimmel Live green room. In between Dickel reserve shots (for those who wanted) and a remote throw-to-commercial bit for which Bill Murray took over the bar area, invited journalists got to watch the live show taping and catch further glimpses of show guests Murray and Tenacious D. Then came Idol’s performance on the Kimmel outdoor stage.
For each course, Dickel brand ambassador Doug Kragel (shown above with Lang) guided diners through shots of “go-to” No. 12 and other barrel vintages, each selected to amplify the food tastes being savored around a long wooden table. Following the sumptuous meal, journalists walked out with a gift bag containing a bottle of No. 12 and a copy of Lang’s first cookbook.
FishbowlNY spent most of the evening in the company of LA Foodie Ben Waters, The Whiskey Jug chief tasting officer Josh Peters, freelance writer Nicholas Pell and The Huffington Post’s Joe Satran, who recently relocated from New York to LA.
Lang, who appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in August and is currently overseeing the construction of a 10,000 square foot restaurant in downtown LA, was a most charming and affable host. His kingly feast with Dickel chasers is also a vivid reminder of one of the main reasons journalists lean towards the food and-or spirits beat: those intermittent, outstanding perks.
