We got the data around the buzzy events, as well as more traditional digital marketing stats that brand players will want to know. Check out nine sets of intriguing numbers below. 1. Putin was once again in the news last week, thanks to photos of him in a submerged submarine with a transparent sitting deck. It comes after many other social-media moments for Vlad in the last year, most notably when he appeared shirtless on a horse. So we asked Amobee Brand Intelligence to find out how many times "Putin" has been mentioned on Twitter in the last 12 months, and the answer is 5.87 million times in the English language, with Twitter sentiment being 10 percent positive, 72 percent neutral, and 17 percent negative, in case you were wondering. 2. Speaking of politics, Borrell Associates predicted that digital advertising during the 2016 election year will reach $1 billion for the first time, accounting for nearly 10 percent of total spending with the Democrats and Republicans. 3. Pew Research found that 54 percent of Twitter users tweeted about news during a four-week study. 4. A study of 600 consumers being released today by HookLogic and Market Tree reveals that 46 percent of them had made a purchase on a smartphone. 5. Foursquare made it known that it has 50 million users who log onto the mobile discovery app at least once a month, according to a VentureBeat story last week. In total, it has 60 million registered users, the tech news site said, which is 5 million more than it had last October. 6. The amount of time consumers spent with digital media on smartphones grew 90 percent between June 2013 and June 2015, a comScore report found, per The Wall Street Journal. The Reston, Va.-based researcher also found that time spent with digital media on tablets grew by 64 percent. 7. Native ads are growing in the mobile space, according to the Twitter-owned mobile ad company MoPub. It found that 8 times as many apps included native inventory in June 2015 compared to the same month in 2014. 8. In the e-commerce world, it appears there is still a lot of work to be done on mobile checkouts. Jumio, an identity management and credentials company, and Harris Interactive found that 56 percent of smartphone owners have abandoned a mobile transaction. If you are a retail marketer, it's not surprising—but still probably worth knowing. 9. The Ashley Madison data heist drew a lot of attention to the online dating site for people who cheat on their spouses.
