In an interview with Wired, Netflix engineering director Xavier Amatriain described a more “complex system of algorithms” that goes beyond ratings and rating predictions to find programming that viewers will not just aspire to watch, but will actually sit down and watch.

Creepy? Perhaps. But “testing has shown that the predicted ratings aren’t actually super-useful,” added Carlos Gomez-Uribe, who is the VP of product innovation and personalization algorithms at Netflix, “while what you’re actually playing is.”
