2K, Firaxis Games Release XCOM: Enemy Within on Mobile

2K and Firaxis Games have announced the launch of XCOM: Enemy Within on iOS, Android and Amazon Fire devices worldwide. The strategy game was originally released on home consoles and computers, and offers what 2K calls a “triple-A gaming experience” for players. It’s also a standalone expansion of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which hit mobile in 2013. In XCOM: Enemy Within, players are presented with new soldier abilities, new weapons and equipment, new enemies to battle, and new plot-driven missions. XCOM: Enemy Within takes players through turn-based battles in a world being invaded by extraterrestrials. During battle, players tap on individual units and tap again to guide them through the world, with a focus on taking cover behind debris, cars and other objects. When attacking enemies, players can choose from a variety of options, firing with standard weapons or tossing grenades, as examples. Players are shown a percentage detailing the likelihood their attack will be successful, and players can move closer to enemies to make attacking easier. Players must also keep in mind, however, that moving away from cover (or into partial cover) makes them vulnerable to attacks from others. In between battles, players can upgrade their characters. The Genetics Lab allows soldiers to unlock genetic modifications, while a Cybernetics Lab gives units access to mechanized suits. Units can also be equipped with new weapons, depending on their class. A sniper rifle, for instance, can be given to a sniper class unit, while a shotgun is available for assault class units, and so on. The title offers multiple difficulty levels to players, as well as advanced options for customizing the overall experience as players see fit. In addition to single-player gameplay, users can compete against others on iOS and Android via one-on-one turn-based matches. Multiplayer is not offered on Amazon devices. “XCOM: Enemy Unknown for mobile proved that turn-based strategy games are a natural fit for touch interfaces,” said Ananda Gupta, lead designer at Firaxis Games, in a statement. “In XCOM: Enemy Within, players can return to the XCOM universe, where they’ll encounter an assortment of new content including powerful new weapons, abilities and strategies, and confront a host of dangerous new alien threats.” XCOM: Enemy Within is available to download for $12.99 on the iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Amazon App Store.
