We are accustomed to celebrities getting annoyed when their likeness or creative output is used illicitly in advertising, but we think that Tom Waits has raised such complaints to an art form. He described the recent use of a Waits imitator in an Opel commercial in Scandinavia, as like, “having a cow’s udder sewn to my face. Painful and humiliating.” (Hmmm. Sounds like he has experience in this area, but we’d rather not delve any further.) Waits, who is exploring his legal options, says his shtick has been used to sell cars in Europe twice before, in an Audi ad in Spain and a Lancia ad in Italy.
