As AdFreak’s final dispatch from greater Tucson, we’d like to introduce you to the billboard campaign for The Thing, the wackiest such ad effort we’ve seen since we saw those endless signs for the South of the Border tourist trap on I-95. There you are, driving down I-10 on the bleak landscape between Tuscon and Tombstone, when, like the drip, drip, drip of water torture (only, oddly enjoyable!), you see a billboard for The Thing, and then another, and then another. Until finally, at the crest of a hill, you come upon the actual Thing—and, as this story about it points out—discover it’s more or less an overly ambitious Dairy Queen.
