Opening the floodgates

Thegates_1Attention marketers and PR people: Your chance to exploit Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s The Gates will last for only 12 more days. First on the Gates-ploitation bandwagon is New York City deputy mayor Dan Doctoroff, who heads the blindly optimistic NYC2012 committee, which is trying to bring the Olympic Games to the Big Apple. In a release passed on to AdFreak yesterday about next week’s visit to New York by IOC folks, Doctoroff says, “The Evaluation Commission will be staying at the Plaza, just steps away from Central Park and the amazing Gates exhibition … a reminder that New York is an arts and cultural capital.” Since when did New York need thousands of “saffron-colored” curtains to get that point across?

There will probably be more instances to wallow in Gates-mania during the next two weeks, but let’s get this out of the way: Is saffron the new orange? Or is orange the old saffron?
