People who complain about the relentless consumerism of today's media franchises should consider the amount of crap Star Wars produced, back in a supposedly simpler time. Just check out BuzzFeed's collection of old Star Wars commercials—for everything from breakfast cereal to underpants. Back then, the obvious merchandising cash cow was an Ewok village and not Jar-Jar Binks. C-3PO also sold tuna fish in Japan with a chipmunk voice, for some reason. Point is, I think media franchises are a little more discerning these days about who and what they immortalize as action figures. This is both good and bad—bad in the sense that the randomness of yesteryear was more fun, good in the sense that I'll never have to see a children's underwear commercial like that ever again. Yeesh.
