Citgo refuses to sit still and take heat for being owned by the Venezuelan government. First, the oil company launched ads playing up its charitable side. Next, it partnered with Joe Kennedy’s Citizens Energy to buy airtime for spots touting home fuel assistance for the needy. The thing is, most people, myself included, knew nothing of Citgo’s ties to Venezuela’s leftist president Hugo Chavez until the company threw its PR machine into high gear. Now, every time I pass Boston’s famed Citgo sign in Kenmore Square, I recall Chavez’s wacky U.N. speech in which he called George W. Bush an imperialist “devil.” Stay the course, Citgo—the campaign’s breaking through.
