Grey’s Anatomy actor Isaiah Washington will be trading in his gay slurs for a message of gay rights in upcoming PSAs for two advocacy groups, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network. It’s part of a proud tradition—commercials as penance—that lately has been the purview mostly of CEOs at misbehaving companies. Politicians have done plenty of “I’m sorry” spots, too, the most notorious being Jerry Springer’s semi-apology, while he was running for governor of Ohio, for paying a prostitute with a personal check.
