The key elements aren't the shattered "children," though their ruined limbs and cracked faces tend to linger, uncomfortably, in one's mind. It's their juxtaposition with the unsettlingly sterile household surroundings, and the flawless photographic compositions, that deliver the emotional knockout punch.
