A deadpan spoof of a typical political ad might be the only thing getting votes in Washington these days.
The ad below for Mount Vernon, George Washington's plantation home outside of Washington, D.C., boosts tourism by portraying the nation's first president as the ideal political leader—something America hasn't seen since, well, George Washington.
"America is going to need leadership, and one man stands out," says the voiceover in the spot, created by John Parlato, executive creative director at D.C.-based Havit Advertising. Touching all the political-ad bases, it shows Washington strolling along his bucolic property displaying all the qualities of the ideal politician, solider, farmer statesman and family man, surrounded by admiring tourists.
The best part comes at the end, where the political ad disclaimer runs: "Paid for by the Committeee to Get You to Do Something Interesting This Weekend."
The spot is running through the fourth quarter in the D.C. DMA on cable and satellite, and on the local ABC affiliate, WJLA.
