We stumbled on a banner ad for this book at the Wall Street Journal’s Web site, and we actually clicked on it (I know, I know, there’s a first!). A while back, we ruminated on the exploits of the U.S. Beer Drinking Team. Well, Travels with Barley: A Journey Through Beer Culture in America could be their bible.
The Publishers Weekly review, posted on Amazon, says this of Ken Wells’s tome: “Full of profundities (‘One thing you can say about lagers: the good ones don’t make you work very hard to like them’), the book also lends historical, scientific and cultural insights into the $75 billion industry—from the likes of beer behemoths like Budweiser to newfangled Extreme Beer, which has bottle values comparable to fine Bordeaux.” It’s unclear if there’s any mention of frogs or lizards, though.
If you’re wondering why the Journal would flog this obscure book, it’s because Wells is a longtime writer there.
