The ‘American Way’ of sizing up Super Bowl ads

Apple1984b1_1I’m  not exactly sure why, but American Airlines’ American Way magazine has seen fit to weigh in on its “40 greatest Super Bowl ads of all time.” Topping the list? Apple’s “1984”, naturally. But some other choices, leave me—well—surprised. At No. 2,’s 1999 spot featuring children with mediocre ambitions? At No. 4, the EDS spot showing cowboys herding cats? (I mean, they were both funny, but …) Well, that’s the beauty of these lists … you can debate them until the cats, er, cows come home. One positive: the list, which unfortunately cannot be found on American Way’s site as of yet, included some almost-forgotten classics, such as the 1973 commercial for Noxzema featuring a pre-Charlie’s Angels Farrah Fawcett with Joe Namath and a Xerox spot from 1977 featuring Brother Dominic making lots of copies.
