Anti-cigarette activists are up in arms about American Spirit cigarette ads that claim the brand is eco-friendly. The ads call the products "organic" because the manufacturing process uses hybrid vehicles and renewable energy. The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids thinks American Spirit is "trying to greenwash a deadly and addictive product," but that hasn't stopped the ad from appearing in Field & Stream, Wired, Mother Jones, Elle and Marie Claire. And why should it, really? American Spirit has been tricking hippies into supporting Reynolds American Inc. for years, so this is really just more of the same. They're the Ben & Jerry's of cigarettes.
