Where did all the serifs go? If you’ve been seeing an unusual number of ads lately set in Helvetica, maybe it’s because art directors are quietly celebrating the typeface’s 50th birthday. An Associated Press article (linked here in its Washington Post incarnation) discusses how ubiquitous Helvetica has become, thanks in part to its inclusion among the typefaces originally provided on an Apple computer. If you can’t get enough of it, go to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where an exhibition titled “50 Years of Helvetica” opened last week.
