Y&R S.F. Wins Creative Nod on Sunkist

NEW YORK The San Francisco office of WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam has won creative duties on Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages’ Sunkist after a review, the client confirmed. Billings are estimated at $5-10 million.

The other contenders for the business were the incumbent, Y&R subsidiary BrandBuzz in New York (which also handles promotional duties), and independents Laird + Partners in New York and North Castle Partners in Stamford, Conn., a client representative said. BrandBuzz will retain promotional responsibilities, the rep added.

Last year, creative duties on another Cadbury brand, 7 Up, shifted from the New York office of Y&R to San Francisco, also after a review.

BrandBuzz landed creative duties on Sunkist two years ago [Adweek Online, May 21, 2003], after then-incumbent Foote Cone & Belding assumed creative duties on rival Coca-Cola’s Diet Coke.

Major media spending on Sunkist has dwindled in recent years, from about $6 million in 2000 to about $3 million in 2003 and less than $2 million in the first 11 months of 2004, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.

Y&R’s first work, a TV and radio campaign, is expected in late April, the rep said.
