NEW YORK Dow Jones said it would offer readers of ad-supported software that will stream breaking news headlines on their computer desktops.

Called Desktop News Alerts, the software displays breaking news headlines in a small window that sits on computer screens. The headlines, which will be major news events and stock market swings, will link to full stories. Stories are only available to subscribers. will intersperse the feeds with text advertisements from advertisers. AT&T is the first advertiser to sign up, Dow Jones said.

The product complements’s e-mail alerts. It also has an application that allows AOL Instant Messenger users to access news headlines and stock quotes.
