Woo Shoots Nike Soccer Ad

Director John Woo, best known for his action/adventure feature films, recently completed his first TV commercial-a global spot for Nike.
The action-filled ad, originating from Wieden & Kennedy in Portland, Ore., touts a new soccer shoe, the Mercurial, and features the Nike-sponsored Brazilian national team. It breaks next month in Europe, before making its way to the U.S., Asia and South America.
The undisclosed ad budget is the biggest Nike has ever put behind its soccer initiative, according to Pierre-Laurent Baudey, Nike’s category advertising director for soccer globally.
Woo (shown here) is one of four feature film directors represented by A Band Apart.35mm, a new division of A Band Apart, a Los Angeles-based production house co-founded by Quentin Tarantino. The new division exclusively produces television commercials by feature filmmakers. Other auteurs on the roster include Kevin Reynolds (Waterworld), George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food) and Peter Segal (Naked Gun 33 1/3).
