Wins Send BS&S to the Movies

Butler, Shine & Stern has landed advertising duties for cable television network American Movie Classics and Discreet Software.

The Sausalito, Calif., agency was awarded both accounts after quiet reviews. The shop would not comment on billings, but sources said each is worth roughly $5 million.

“We’ve definitely been picking up some interesting things,” agency partner and creative director John Butler said. “It’s a far cry more interesting than working on something like blank-dot-com. [We like] working for brands that are established and have a certain following.”

A division of design resource company Autodesk, San Francisco-based Discreet manufactures visual effects software and is a leader in creating 3-D graphics. Its flagship product is Flame, a high-end software that was used to design special effects for such films as Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace and The Grinch.

Agency partner and president Greg Stern said the Discreet win came after a review of Bay Area shops. “We’ve had experience with television and the videogame industry, and now we’re working on a product that works behind the scenes for both of those,” he said. “It’s fun to be going on the other side of the curtain. Before, it had all been consumer advertising. Now we’ll get to talk to the filmmakers and videogame producers.”

Print work is expected to break within the next month in trade magazines and other publications.

Separately, American Movie Classics hired BS&S after a review that included several undisclosed New York shops. The agency worked on projects for the client through last summer and fall. A client representative said AMC was “impressed by their work and liked their thinking.” That work included advertising for Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Network.

AMC representatives said their ad plans are not finalized, but they could include broadcast work. The client will start with print ads in consumer and trade magazines.

AMC is a division of Rainbow Media Holdings. Launched in 1984, it is a 24-hour movie network featuring award-winning original productions about the world of American film. It offers a library of classic films and a blend of original series, documentaries and interstitials.

The channel says it is available in 81 million homes.

BS&S also works with Weider Nutrition and Midway videogames. The shop has also handled such clients as 989 Studios (a Sony offshoot) and numerous dot-coms.
