Wieden Taps Icaro Doria for Launch in Brazil

Speculation about the departure of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners creative director Icaro Doria has ended. The group cd, who worked on HP and Sprint during the last nine months at the Omnicom shop, is returning to his native Brazil to open Wieden + Kennedy’s eighth office on Dec. 1.

Doria (pictured), who becomes ecd at the independent’s new Sao Paulo agency, is teaming up with Andre Gustavo Soares, account services director at Publicis Groupe’s F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi in Sao Paulo for the past three years. He becomes managing director of the Wieden outpost in Sao Paulo.

The Sao Paulo location brings the number of global Wieden network offices to eight, including W+K Portland, Ore., New York, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Shanghai and Delhi.

Before joining Goodby, Doria was global cd for Dell and the group cd running the Bacardi, Virgin Atlantic and VH1 accounts at WPP’s Young & Rubicam, New York. After beginning his career in Brazil, Doria moved to Portugal before coming to the U.S. in 2005 to work as a cd at Publicis Groupe’s Saatchi & Saatchi New York office.

Before F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi, Soares, another Brazilian native, worked as the Asia-AMET regional category director for Unilever at WPP’s JWT Bangkok. He also has been business leader for Ford at JWT Sao Paulo and vp, Ford, at JWT Mexico. Soares has worked on brands like Nike, Honda, Carrefour, Electrolux and Claro Mobile.

In making the announcement, agency co-founder and global cd Dan Wieden hinted of another big hire: “For us it is always about the people, and we have nabbed two of the world’s best to open this office. One more to go and the leadership team will take to their desks in earnest.”
