Wieden Names Exec on Nike Account

LOS ANGELES Former Virgin America airlines vp, marketing and communications Spence Kramer has joined independent Wieden + Kennedy as the global account supervisor on the agency’s Nike account, the agency confirmed.

Kramer was not immediately available for comment.

Kramer replaces Rebecca Van Dyck, who held the position for four years until last December, when she became the worldwide advertising director at Apple.

Prior to his position at Virgin America, Spence had been vp, advertising and promotions at ESPN.

Kramer joins the account during a period of instability in the long-running Nike-Wieden relationship.

In April, Nike’s iconic running shoes, as well as Wieden’s portion of the Nike+ and Nike ID business shifted to MDC Partners’ Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Miami. At the time, Dean Stoyer, director of communications at Nike, said, “We’re going to Crispin because they have a proven track record for creative and break through ideas.”

The Beaverton, Ore.-based client spends around $200 million on domestic marketing each year, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.

Kramer joined Wieden’s Portland, Ore., headquarters office slightly more than a month ago.
