Let’s hope we needn’t look back on the last quarter of 2003 as a golden age for the job market in advertising, media and marketing. Judging by the volume of help-wanted classified ads in Adweek, hiring was on the upswing then—a trend that carried over to January 2004. As you can see in the chart, though, last month was a coast-to-coast dud—and this at a time when the experts have been predicting decent growth in ad spending for 2004. Companies are clearly in no rush to staff up for a possible rise in their marketing workload.
