Wegmans Sacks Flutie

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets has replaced one local star with another in its new ad campaign.

CEO Robert B. Wegman takes over as ad spokesman in place of NFL quarterback Doug Flutie. Flutie, Wegmans? celebrity endorser since December 1998, was released by the Buffalo Bills after the 2000 season and has since signed with the San Diego Chargers.

Wegman, who last graced advertising about 20 years ago, appears in one of six ads in the new campaign from Jay Advertising, Rochester. The spots were filmed in the stores and star actual employees.

Based in Rochester, Wegmans operates 60 supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

“We wanted to tell the story through the experiences of our people, and who better to tell it than Robert Wegman, our longest-serving employee, who started his career in the family’s produce business 59 years ago,” said Steve Michaelson, vice president of marketing.
