Wecal to Rejoin HHCC

Will the third time be a charm for David Wecal? The copywriter is in final negotiations to rejoin Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, this time as executive creative director of its New York office, according to president Chuck Kushell.
Wecal, who has twice worked for the Boston-based shop (now owned by the Interpublic Group of Cos.), has been freelancing for its New York office since January and was instrumental in the agency’s recent pitch for Priceline.com.
He is expected to report to Kushell and chief creative officer Fred Bertino, who runs the creative departments of the New York and Boston offices.
Wecal’s first task in his new position will be to oversee the launch of Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group’s Web site (www.fbr.com). The Washington, D.C., investment bank is an underwriter of initial public offerings, particularly in the Internet and technology arenas. HHCC was tapped by the client last week. Kushell estimated billings at $25 million.
In 1992 Wecal and onetime business partner Dean Noble left Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG in New York, where they worked on Volvo, to become the top creative team on Infiniti at HHCC’s former West Coast outpost. They developed just one campaign before the client fired the agency.
After a brief return to MVBMS and later HHCC, Wecal freelanced for a variety of agencies, including Hal Riney & Partners, San Francisco, where he worked on General Motors. He began his copywriting career in Boston more than a decade ago.
